Who doesn’t know at least one of the countless versions of “Treasure Island”? So famous and loved, that the story was already published in countless book versions, audio books, movies, TV series and translated into a zillion of languages worldwide. Here is finally a modern version of this ageless classic of the Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson. This was his first novel and since the release 1883, over 130 years have passed and the story is still fresh, entertaining and loved by young and old readers.SPOILER:The story is about a 13 year old boy named Jim Hawkins, whose parents own a tavern near the harbor where many sailors spend their time after returning back home. One day curious young Jim finds a treasure chest which once belonged to a captain. The chest contains a real treasure map! Even before another greedy captain can grab it and get hold of it, Jim decides to help two sailors to find the treasure marked on the map. Of course only under the premise that they take him with them on the expedition. A few pirates are after the treasure aswell, but without the map they don’t stand a chance of ever finding it. Jim and the crew of the expedition experience several adventures on the island while treasure hunting. The story of Treasure Island is THE classic of its time in the adventure and youth genre. Even nowadays it is a popular read in high schools or in English classes (for foreign students).Personally, I recommend the book to boys and girls aged 9 and older, or for younger kids to read aloud, or to read the story together with an adult. As special surprise I watched a movie version and the TV series with my daughter after she finished reading Treasure island. That way she learned that movie version don’t always have to be 1:1 copies of the novel and that there’s ample scope on how to tell the story. She can’t say which version she liked better, for her the novel, movie and TV series are “similar in a way, but also different”I can only recommend Treasure Island, no matter if for young or adult readers. Even for me after over 30 years it was a pleasure to read it again, and as an adult you have a deeper understanding of the meaning and hidden clues.
