Tom takes a job as the lighthouse keeper half a day's journey from the Western coast of
Australia. With him Tom brings his wife Isabel. After two miscarriages and one still birth
Isabel hears a baby's cry. A boat washed up carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom wants to
report it immediately but Isabel has taken the baby to her breast. Against Tom's judgment
they claim her as their own. When she is two they return to the mainland and are reminded that
there are other people in the world. Their choice has devastated one of them.
