In Europa verlieren die Kirchen an Mitgliedern die Zahl der Gottesdienstbesucher sinkt und es
gibt weniger Menschen die an Gott glauben. Diese Säkularisierung hat jedoch bestimmte Ursachen
und ist kein unabwendbares Schicksal. Vielmehr gibt es uneindeutige Hinweise darauf dass die
Spiritualität individuellere Formen annimmt die mit inneren Erfahrungen verbunden sind. Diese
Situation stellt eine Herausforderung für die Theologie und die Kirchen dar. In der
christlichen Tradition verweist Spiritualität auf den Heiligen Geist. Dieses Thema muss
bearbeitet werden. Ebenso werden die Kirchen pluraler und flexibler ohne ihr spirituelles und
theologisches Rückgrat aufzugeben. Deshalb verbindet dieses Buch soziologische Analysen

are losing members the number of people attending church services is falling and there are
fewer people who believe in God. However this secularization has certain causes and is not an
inevitable fate. Rather there are ambiguous indications that spirituality is taking on more
individual forms that are linked to inner experiences. This situation represents a challenge
for theology and the churches. In the Christian tradition spirituality refers to the Holy
Spirit. This topic needs to be addressed. Similarly churches are becoming more pluralistic and
flexible without giving up their spiritual and theological backbone. This book therefore
