Da alcuni anni E. Lelli ha sviluppato un metodo di ricerca che unisce alla filologia
l'approccio comparativo discipline demoetnoantropologiche. Questo metodo 'demofilologico' è
applicato in questo volume agli idilli di Teocrito un autore che come pochi altri offre ai
suoi lettori un repertorio straordinario di tratti di cultura popolare: credenze superstizioni
proverbi motivi di canto tradizionale. L'ipotesi del volume è che di tutti questi elementi
della quotidianità del mondo agropastorale Teocrito si fa testimone non imitatore erudito
trasponendo in una forma sicuramente più letterarizzata le tradizioni di canto pastorale.A mano
a mano che l'analisi degli idilli bucolici procederà ci si renderà conto di quanti termini
gesti riferimenti siano pienamente comprensibili solo grazie alla comparazione folklorica con
le tradizioni del mondo agropastorale moderno. Proprio la presenza di elementi folklorici
inoltre può costituire una cartina al tornasole per recuperare una cronologia teocritea che si
inquadra perfettamente con le poche (ma preziose) notizie biografiche antiche e con i più
sicuri riferimenti interni del corpus. For a new approach to the study of the ancient Greek and
Roman literature and culture E. Lelli has proposed a comparative method dealing with philology
and demoethnoanthropology for several years. In this volume the 'demophilologic' method is
applied to the study of Theocritus an author very rich in popular items: beliefs proverbs
superstitions and traditional songs. The central idea of this book is that Theocritus was a
real witness of this popular world not a creator of a fictional rural world which makes his
poems a literary transposition of the tradition of popular rural songs.Proceeding with the
analysis of Theocritus's bucolic idills it will be argued that not every word gesture and
reference to the rural world can be deeply and completely understood but a 'folkloric
comparison' with the popular and traditional culture is still surviving in today's agropastoral
culture. The folkloric elements and their greater or lesser presence in these poems can also be
regarded as a hint to rebuilt Theocritus's biography this seems to fit in with the little but
precious news about the life of the poet coming from ancient sources and internal references
in his works.
