For a new approach to the study of the ancient Greek and Roman literature and culture E. Lelli has proposed a comparative method dealing with philology and demoethnoanthropology for several years. In this volume the 'demophilologic' method is applied to the study of Theocritus an author very rich in popular items: beliefs proverbs superstitions and traditional songs. The central idea of this book is that Theocritus was a real witness of this popular world not a creator of a fictional rural world which makes his poems a literary transposition of the tradition of popular rural songs.Proceeding with the analysis of Theocritus's bucolic idills it will be argued that not every word gesture and reference to the rural world can be deeply and completely understood but a 'folkloric comparison' with the popular and traditional culture is still surviving in today's agropastoral culture. The folkloric elements and their greater or lesser presence in these poems can also be regarded as a hint to rebuilt Theocritus's biography this seems to fit in with the little but precious news about the life of the poet coming from ancient sources and internal references in his works.
