Presenting detailed case studies of Developmental states in Asia the book argues that the
state has always been an important part of the solution for problems of economic backwardness.
After identifying the conditions under which states can effectively assume active roles a
theoretical framework is developed and applied to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
