This book (in two volumes) discusses two problems concerning the Polish-Ruthenian borderland
with a particular focus on Cherven' Towns: the history of the region on the Upper and Middle
bug in the 10th-15th c. in the light of the evidence of written cartographic and onomastic
sources and the history of Polish Russian and Ukrainian scientific studies on this region. A
separate paper discusses the contribution of Polish art historians to studies on the heritage
of Byzantium Rus' and other Orthodox countries in the Middle Ages while an analysis carried
out by cultural anthropologists presents the present-day in the Polish-Ukrainian borderland.
The book also contains recollections of four participants in the excavation work carried out in
the region of Cherven' Towns between 1952 and 1955. Individual analyses are the result of an
international co-operation of researchers from Poland Germany Russia Serbia and Ukraine
pursued within two wide-scale projects: The Golden Apple ofPolish archaeology. Stronghold
complexes at Czermno and Grodek (Cherven' Towns) - chronology and function in the light of past
and current research (Ministry of Science and Higher Education Warsaw Poland National

Marches Poland and Bohemia from the 10th to the 12th century (Federal Ministry of Education
