In this absorbing work a young French girl named Alix is sent to live with an English family
during the financial struggles of World War I. While in England Alix experiences culture shock
and meets Giles and Owen Bradley two brothers with a complicated family history involving
Alix's scandalous mother. As Alix grows older Giles is asked to marry her but instead agrees
to help her find a suitable husband. The novel explores themes of love scandal and cultural
differences during a tumultuous time in history.
