events of the story take place just before World War I. The book chronicles the tragedy of
Edward Ashburnham  the soldier to whom the title refers  and his seemingly perfect marriage 
which turned out not to be so  along with stories of his two American friends. The novel was
loosely based on the experiences of Ford's messy personal life.
