Gunnar Kaufman is an awkward black surfer bum who is moved from Santa Monica to urban West Los
Angeles. There he begins to undergo a transformation from neighborhood outcast to basketball
superstar and eventually becomes the reluctant messiah of a divided downtrodden people.
