The British lead by their Prime minster Neville Chamberlin try to avoid another military confrontation in Europe and with the help of Hitler’s good friend Mussolini arrange the cession of the Sudetenland and avoid war at the last minute. In between the historic figures of Chamberlain, Hitler, Mussolini, Daladier, Göring and a lot of other figures. Harris has created two characters, friends from joint student days in Oxford, the German diplomat Paul von Hartmann and Hugh Legat, promising civil servant on the British side, who meet again during the conference.The conference preparation, last ditch negotiations during the conference, press reviews, translations and alterations of the conference documents and the treaties in Munich, Berlin and London are expertly described. The atmosphere in Munich is haunting, as the German military, SS and Gestapo are keeping a close eye on all foreign and of course German diplomats. Very dense storytelling and to my feeling we have not seen the last of the career diplomat Hugh Legat and will meet him again.
