The ABC‘s of LGBT+ by Ashley Mardell, now Ash Hardell, is basically a modern sex education book. It is a guide and lexicon (with personal comentary) of the different genders, sexual and other attractions and much more.The author, Ash Hardell, is a YouTube star and one main topic of her YouTube channel is everything LGBT+-related. In this book he talks to the reader as a friend and guides them through the jungle of ideas, labels and definitions of the LGBT+ world in a very respectful and esteeming way. Their informal style gives the impression that they are really talking (not writing) to you.One of his main messages are that it is sometimes hard to understand identities that you do not share. Therefore, she gives other people (bloggers, youtubers) a voice by citing how they would themselves describe their own identity and by letting them tell their stories.The book is filled with beautiful drawings, graphs and photos, it is a pleasure to the eye. But it is a pleasure to touch, too, because the cover of the book is not only artistically styled but also made of a very soft material. It is a pleasure to simply hold the book in your hands. This contributes to the reading experience.The intended audience for the book is obviously young readers. On the back of the book, it says that it is intended for questioning teens, teachers or parents. Well, I am neither of these and I still thoroughly enjoyed the book in every way. I have learned that there actually is a word for what I identify as.I think that this book should be used in every sex ed class as those classes mostly neglect other genders than female and male and other orientations than hetero, homo and bi, if they even mention the last two. This guide promotes a world that is less of a place of prejudice and more of a place of understanding and respect.
