The 32nd Austrian Congress in Linguistics in 2004 hosted a workshop entitled «Empirical
Approaches to Discourse Analysis». This workshop aimed at bringing together proponents of
different empirical approaches to discourse analysis and raising discussion among such diverse
disciplines as Systemic Functional Linguistics  Rhetorical Structure Theory  Conversation
Analysis  Social Pragmatics  Argumentation Theory  Critical Discourse Analysis  Multimodal
Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics. The volume is the result of the fruitful discussion
and the interdisciplinary work started in that workshop. In eight compact chapters the
contributors outline how empirical methods developed within the frameworks of these disciplines
can complement and enhance 21st century Discourse Analysis. 2004 fand im Rahmen der 32.
Österreichischen Linguistentagung der Workshop «Empirieorientierte Ansätze in der
Diskursanalyse im Vergleich» statt. Ziel des Workshops war es  Proponenten unterschiedlicher
empirischer Ansätze einzuladen und eine Diskussion zwischen Wissenschaftlern aus solch
unterschiedlichen Disziplinen wie Funktionaler Linguistik  Rhetorical Structure Theorie 
Konversationsanalyse  Sozialer Pragmatik  Argumentationstheorie  Multimodaler Diskursanalyse 
Kritischer Diskursanalyse und Korpuslinguistik in Gang zu setzen. Der Band ist das Ergebnis
dieser fruchtbaren Diskussion und der interdisziplinären Forschung  die in dem Workshop ihren
Anfang nahm. In acht kompakten Kapiteln zeigen die Autoren innovative empirische Methoden für
eine moderne Diskursanalyse auf.
